“Is it a risky move to buy a property that’s totally off grid?” Off-grid is an example of shifting priorities.
Previously it conjured up images of a rustic – or rusty – cabin in some remote backwater, lit by candles or kerosene lamps, cooking on a wood stove or open fire. But no more. Thanks to technological advances, off-grid today is far more sophisticated with solar panels and backup batteries providing sufficient and affordable energy to run a full home, day and night, year-round. And off-grid is not the sole domain of remote rural properties. Many residential homes are disconnecting from the grid, not simply to curb sky-rocketing energy prices, or leave a lighter footprint, but, in the face of grid overload during our increasingly hot summers, to take control over their energy supply. I know several residential properties that run totally off-grid without issue. As long as the property has the appropriate quality/ quantity infrastructure and you’re comfortable with the concept, I wouldn’t be dissuaded from purchasing an off-grid property. Today’s offgrid lifestyle is definitely less Beverly Hillbillies and more Good Life (for those of us who can remember the visionary series).
Your needs will be met, and the planet will love you. Win-win.
